Sixth Relection: extreme capitalism

The story of Oryx and Crake featured a society ruled by corporations, and the author uses this to express the how much horror can extreme capitalism cause.  Oryx lived a pitiful childhood.  Her entire village lived off human trafficking -- of their own children.  However, there was nothing for them to do, and these people even do this voluntarily, because there was no other way for them to earn enough money to live.

It's all about money.

Under the extreme capitalism, in one part of the world, people are so poor that they need to sell their children to stay alive.  On the other side, however, there are people rich enough and bored enough that they want to see live executions for entertainment.  This great gap between the poor and the rich is a direct consequence of extreme capitalism.  The rich becomes richer, and the poor becomes poorer.  Democracy and morality no longer exist as people struggle for cash, and the world becomes an oligarchy.

When the social gaps are this big, and the poor suffers so much, it is only expected that some person, or some group of individuals will lead a revolution to change that system.

  1. What you're describing seems a lot like the Hunger Games. Do you think the two books are conveying a similar message?

    1. I haven't read past chapter 2 of the Hunger Games, so I can't really say. However, the stark contrast between the poor and the rich does feel familiar.

  2. The case in which Oryx was treated badly could always happen in our real society, and as I was reading the novel, I felt very sad that Oryx thinks this is not a big deal and it is normal to her.

It's very sad to see children like Oryx suffering from severe capitalism.. Have you noticed that extreme capitalism also makes corporations or the rich class to go out of control just to get more profit? Think about chickenobs.

    3. The drastic measures that the corporations take to gain profit is very, very scary. Hospitals would implant in you viruses so you will get sick again. These people seemed to have forgotten all about morals and justice. It also scares me that many of these people think that it's completely okay to do these horrible things for money.

  4. Indeed, environment is extremely important for human beings. The author probably wants to reflect the current situation of the environment, and warns people about it. I agree with you that we should take actions right away in order to solve the environmental problem.
